What is Therapy?

Psychotherapeutic counselling is a therapy that can offer a supportive, safe and confidential environment where you can talk about anything in your past, present or future that raises difficulties or concerns for you.

The therapeutic process can provide a chance for you to make sense of your feelings, manage difficult life experiences, bring clarity and focus to areas of confusion, and manage difficulties in relationships.

Do I need Therapy?

People come to therapy for many different reasons.  Anything you want to discuss can be talked about in therapy; it is a place where you can speak freely about anything you need to.

Some of the issues are Anxiety, Panic attacks, low self–esteem, Depression, Low Mood, Self-Harm, Eating Disorders, Divorce, Bereavement, Addiction, Divorce, Family or Relationship Issues, Obsessive compulsive behaviours, Intrusive thoughts, and Personality Disorders. This is not an exhaustive list and I am happy to speak to you regarding anything you’d like to bring.

What’s the time commitment?

There is no straightforward answer to this, your therapy journey will be as individual as you are. As everyone has different needs and life experiences how long it takes you to get what you want from therapy will not be the same as someone else.

I encourage clients to work at their own pace. While you may want to achieve your goals in a set time frame, putting yourself under pressure just adds to your struggles. Progress, not perfection. Acknowledging your progress is an important part of the therapeutic process in a world where we want everything right now.

How long are sessions?

Sessions are 50 minutes for individuals and 60 minutes for couples as standard. I can offer longer sessions on occasion with prior agreement, and we may decide that a longer session would be beneficial.

I am not able to extend a session if you arrive late.

How often do I need therapy?

Meeting weekly enhances the development of a trusting therapeutic relationship between client and therapist. It enables a consistent flow in the therapy work and will generally benefit your outcomes and goals in a way that sporadic attendance can’t. Often when a client is new to therapy and inexperienced in how it works, there may be a belief that sporadic sessions, with no regular commitment, can be of benefit, however, the flow of work is often broken, and clients are less likely to get what they need from the therapy journey.

Once a good relationship has been established, and clients are well into their therapy journey, fortnightly sessions may be appropriate.

First time in Therapy?

In our first session, we will be getting to know each other, and my aim is to help you feel at ease. Everyone is anxious to begin with, and that’s ok. I will take some details from you and go through our counselling agreement; this outlines how we will work together and we will discuss confidentiality.

Once the formalities are done, we can explore what’s brought you to therapy, and if you have an idea of your goals, it’s ok if you don’t, not everyone is sure at this stage.

A few minutes before the end of the session we can discuss if you’d like to work with me and if so, we can book your next session.
