What is therapy?
Psychotherapeutic counselling is a therapy that can offer a supportive, safe and confidential environment where you can talk about anything in your past, present or future that raises difficulties or concerns for you.
The therapeutic process can provide a chance for you to make sense of your feelings, to manage difficult life experiences, to bring clarity and focus to areas of confusion and to manage difficulties in relationships.
Why do people come to therapy?
People come to therapy for just about any reason you can think of and many that you can’t. There is absolutely nothing that can’t be talked about in therapy, it really is a place where you can discuss anything you need to.
Just some of the issues are : Anxiety, Panic attacks, Low Self –esteem, Depression, Low Mood, Self-Harm, Eating Disorders, Divorce, Bereavement, Addiction, Divorce, Family or Relationship Issues, Obsessive compulsive behaviours, Intrusive thoughts, Personality Disorders……….. To name but a few.
How long does therapy take?
There really is not straight forward answer to this, your therapy journey will be as individual as you are. As everyone has different needs and life experiences so how long it takes you to get what you want from therapy will not be the same as someone else.
I encourage clients to work at their own pace, whilst you may want to achieve your goals in a set time frame, putting yourself under pressure just adds to your struggles, progress not perfection. Acknowledging your progress is an important part of the therapeutic process in a world where we want everything right now.
How long are the sessions?
Session are for 60 minutes, on occasion with prior agreement we may decide that a longer session would be beneficial.
Session are not extended if you arrive late.
How often should I attend?
Meeting weekly enhances the development of a trusting therapeutic relationship between client and therapist, it enables a consistent flow in the therapy work and will generally benefit the client’s outcomes and goals in a way that sporadic attendance can’t. Often when a client is new to therapy and inexperienced in how it works, there may be a belief that sporadic sessions, with no regular commitment can be of benefit , however the flow of work is often broken and clients are less likely to get what they need from the therapy journey.
However once a good relationship has been established and clients are well into their therapy journey, fortnightly session may be appropriate.
What should I expect in my first session?
In our first session we will be getting to know each other and my aim is to help you feel at ease, everyone is anxious to begin with and that’s ok. I will take some details from you and go through our counselling agreement, this outlines how we will work together and I will explain about confidentiality.
After that we can explore what’s brought you to therapy and if you have an idea of your goals, its ok if you don’t, not everyone is sure at this stage.
A few minutes before the end of the session we can discuss if you’d like to work with me and if so we can book your next session.
